All RIGHT :)

Have you ever really noticed how you take in the information your teacher is saying? How do you react? What exactly are you doing while your teacher is talking? I know it sounds silly, but it is actually really interesting. Who knew you would actually have a certain way of learning.

Last year, Mr. Whiting came into our class to give us a lesson on our learning profiles. When I heard that he was coming to teach us about that, my first reaction- this is going to be really pointless. He came in and talked about what we were going to do. I listened, while rocking in my chair and possibly fidgeting with a pen. It was nothing interesting- or was it? Mr. Whiting had given us some tasks to do. Tasks that we would never think actually effected the way we learned. They were really simple tasks such as, dropping a pen and noticing which hand you reacted with, leaning forward or backward and using one foot to stop yourself from falling. When you answered a phone, which ear did you put the phone to- right or left? Then, after we did that he asked us about our learning styles. Did we learn better by organizing and doing things in order? Or did we learn better from creativity and just looking at the big picture? If we were organized, it meant we were logic and we used our left side of the brain more. If we were creative, it meant we were gestalt and we used our right side of the brain more. I was all right, which led to me being a profile L.

Don't you find it frustrating when you're just moving around in your chair in class and your teacher gets mad at you? It happens to me all the time! It's nothing I can control and honestly, it helps me learn better. It's nothing I ever really realize, so how could it possibly distract me from my work? Although, I do understand that it might distract other people in my class and even my teacher which is why they would probably tell me to stop, but it does help me with my learning! If my teachers want me to do good in a class, then why don't they just let me rock in my chair? So I think my teachers should know that me and my chair get along REALLY well.

Since this is who I am then I think there are a few things that would help me as a learner. For example, placing me in a spot where I can learn and move at the same time, without distracting myself or others. Now, that doesn't mean putting me in a place like the gym to just move around all I want, but it could mean in a place (probably near the back of the class) where I can move around in my chair without anybody noticing. Not just anywhere at the back of the class, but probably somewhere where I can really focus and take in the information without anything getting in my way. Since my right ear and right eye are the dominant parts then possibly putting me at the right side of the class would make a huge difference in my learning.

According to the sheet of paper about profile Ls, lazy 8's are a big help. Last year (the first time I had ever heard about lazy 8's) I had no idea what they were so I searched them up. Even though I am a profile L learner I don't think I do lazy 8's very much, but I do like to doodle randomly on anything that I have. If you looked at my binder or just any sheets of paper I own, you would see drawings almost everywhere! It also says that drawing and writing with the non-dominant hand is a great help. I realize I actually do that a lot! Last year I tried writing with my left hand and my handwriting was honestly horrible! This year I tried it again and I did it a lot more and I realized my left-hand writing has gotten a lot better!

Last, but not least, a message to my teachers. Well as I said before, placing me in a spot in the class that is near the back on the right side would probably help me a lot! When I'm under stress, trust me, you don't want me in your class, but you obviously have no choice (muahaha.) Though, there are ways to tolerate me being under stress. Sometimes I need some quiet time alone to just process new ideas because when I have too much to think about I can get out of hand. If you give me just a little bit of time alone then I will be able to communicate easier and I'll be able to control myself more. On the other hand, if you just dump more and more information on me, I will get very stressed and very frustrated and I might blow up. As I said before, just give me 5 or 10 minutes of some quiet time alone to process all the information and I will be fine after that. Concluding my explanation on my learning profile, I'm really happy Mr. Whiting came into our class to teach us about these little things in life that we never really notice.

  • I remember when I was about 4 and I saw my brother fall of his bike and I was really scared. He came into the house and his knee had blood all over it and I was really young so I got really scared.

  • I remember when I was about 5 and my first tooth fell off after waiting so long for it to fall off. My mum came to pick me up from school and I had my first wiggly tooth so I kept playing with it and then it finally fell off.

  • I remember when I was about 5 and I went to Egypt with my friends and my family. We stayed on a cruise and every morning we would stop somewhere and get down and just go around the place.

  • I remember when I was about 4 and I got lost in a super market and I had no idea what to do. Me and my mum were just walking around the supermarket and I just wandered off and I had no idea where I was and I think I started crying, but I finally found her.

  • I remember when I was about 3 or 4 and I had ballet class. After the class, my mum would always wait inside the building, but when I came out of the class she wasn’t there. The place was really small so I didn’t really know where else to look. So I asked my ballet teacher to help me. And I was crying so much. And they had no idea and they were asking everybody and it became really serious. Then, in the end, we figured out she was just waiting outside the whole time.

  • I remember when I was 5 and it was my first day of school. I was new to the school and I had a ‘Dora The Explorer’ roller bag and apparently it wasn’t ‘cool’ to have a Dora bag so some of the guys started laughing at me. I came home really sad and immediately asked my mum if I could use a different bag.

  • I remember when I was about 3 or 4 and I had my first birthday party at Build-A-Bear workshop. I lived in Houston, Texas. I loved going to Build-A-Bear Workshop and we decided to have my birthday party there. It was really fun.

  • I remember when I was 6 and we went on a holiday in Bangkok. I brought my favourite teddy bear with me and since I was really small, my brother and sister loved to annoy me. So my parents went out so it was only me, my brother and my sister in the hotel. My brother and sister took my teddy bear and hung it in the shower and started the water. I started crying so much, but my teddy bear was okay.

  • I remember when I was about 6 or 7 and we went on holiday and we stopped in Paris. It was only for a day so we didn't have much time, but of course we went to the Eiffel Tower. There was an ice cream booth under the Eiffel Tower. It was really fun.

  • I remember when I was 4 and we went to Disney World in Florida. I saw my best friend at the airport and we were both going to Disney World. It was a lot of fun because I was really small so everything seemed so cool and the rides were really fun.

Me In 3 :)

Me In 3

Who Am I? How can I explain who I am? Well I think these three objects can really describe me. My laptop, my bed and my ipod. There are many different reasons for these being the three objects that I think really represent who I am.

So the first object that I think reperesents me is my laptop. My laptop isn’t just any laptop. First of all let me describe what my laptop looks like. Then I’ll explain how that relates to me. So my laptop is pink. It has 2 pictures of Big Time Rush on it. It also has one picture of Taylor Lautner on it. So this description really relates to me. First of all, my favorite color is pink so that’s why the laptop color is pink. Second of all, Big Time Rush is my favorite band so that’s why those pictures are on it. Another reason I chose this object is because of the picture of Taylor Lautner on there and I love Taylor Lautner. The very last reason I chose this object is because that it shows that I actually enjoy using technology and I probably like doing things online. So I think if anybody just randomly saw my laptop then they would easily find some things about me.

The next object that I chose was my bed. It’s not exactly an object that I can carry around, but the things on my bed really explain who I am. The sheets on my bed are pink because, like I said before, it’s my favorite color. I also have some Angry Bird pillows on my bed. I love Angry Birds. One more thing that I have on my bed is a Build-A-Bear because when I was younger I used to LOVE making Build-A-Bears. So I think those things also represent me.

Now the very last object that I think symbolizes me is my i-pod touch. My i-pod is black with a pink superman sign on it and it has M&M earphones. Not only does the appearance explain me, but also what it contains. My i-pod has all the music I like. It has all the games I like to play. It has a facebook, twitter and skype app because those are the things that I like to do. So that’s why my i-pod exemplifies me.

So now you know who I am because of these three objects; My laptop, my bed and my i-pod. And I think that if anybody wanted to learn some stuff about me, I would be able to just show them my laptop, my bed and my i-pod and they would figure some things out.

My Name, Aishah Faiz :)

My Name

What is the meaning of my name? Why is Aishah even my name? Well the name Aishah is an Arabic name which means ‘Alive’ or ‘She who lives’. I love the name Aishah for many reasons. First of all, I think it’s different compared to some other names. I don’t know so many people with the same name as me. Another thing I like about my name is that it starts with an ‘A’ because my, my brother’s and my sister’s names all start with an ‘A’, so we’re kind of like the ‘A’ family. When I was younger I didn’t really like my name. I didn’t want a different name compared to everybody else. I didn’t really have a particular name that I wanted to change to, but I just didn’t want to be called Aishah. Now, I actually like the name Aishah. I realized it is actually better to be different.

I don’t think I have ever been teased about my name. I haven’t had some serious nicknames, but some of my friends in my old school and some of my relatives call me ‘Shah’ or ‘Shashah’. I like being called that and I actually respond to it. My Skype name also includes my nickname. I asked my mum how she chose the name Aishah for me and she told me she looked in the book of names and she liked the name Aishah and she also liked the meaning of the name so that’s how she chose it.

A lot of people sometimes spell my name without an ‘H’ at the very end. Yes, I understand that people are trying to write my name even if they spell it like that, but do I like it when they spell it like that? No, I don’t. Even though it’s not their fault, I still find it frustrating sometimes. I especially hate it when people I’m close to or I’ve known for a long time, spell it like that. Something else about my name is that sometimes people call me ‘Aieesha’. Not spelled like that, but pronounced like that. Like my humanities teacher last year called me ‘Aieesha’ throughout the first half of the year. I was really used to that name because people in my past schools have called me that also, and I do respond to that name. Then, I finally decided to tell him how it was really pronounced. From now on, I have told most of my teachers how to pronounce it and they have all pronounced it correctly.

Greek Myth!

This is a movie trailer I created recreating the Greek Story :) Hope you like it! :D

I made it!

1. What piece of work and learning are you most proud? Explain.
I'm most proud of my lit circles. From the start of the year I wasn't getting such good grades on my lit circles, mostly because I wasn't so good at writing well structured paragraphs and essays. I didn't respond to things correctly because I wasn't including the right details. As the time went by and Mr. Thomas kept going through the ways to make your paragraph or essay well structured (topic sentence, evidence, conclusion), I had finally got the hang of writing well structured paragraphs and my lit circle grades went up. So I think that's what I'm most proud
of.

2. What were your greatest challenges? Explain.
I think my greatest challenge were blogposts. I had the same problem with blogposts that I did with lit circles. My blogposts weren't well structured. The only blogposts that I didn't have much trouble with at first were narrative type of blogposts. The ones that you had to make a story. I have a very strong imagination which is why I found that part the easiest. I learned to write proper blogposts at the same time that I learned to write well structured paragraphs for my lit circles. After learning the well structured paragraph form, I also realized some change in my grades of my blogposts. So that's what I thought was my greatest challenge.

3. Reflecting on your growth this year, what did you learn about yourself as a learner?
At the beginning of the year I wasn't really sure what type of learned I was, but after Mr. Whiting came in and gave us the lesson on our learning profile, I really did realize the type of learner I was. I was more creative with my work. I didn't do it all so organized. Like I said before, I was better at writing storie rather than informational type of paragraphs. So that's what I learned from this year as to what type of learner I am.

4. To evaluate your work habits, choose 1 of the following from each category ( and provide explanations):

a) Behavior
Satisfactory- I think my behaviour is satisfactory because I don't think I had the best behaviour. I did talk to my friends a lot during class and didn't get much work done, but it only happened once in a while. There were times when I wouldn't get much work done and there were times when I got a lot of work done. So I don't think my behaviour is perfect, but I don't think it is really really bad.

b) Participation
Actively participate in class- I'm always participating in class whether it is a group project or a class discussion. I always try to answer questions in class. Also in group projects I always do the work that I'm assigned. I don't want to let my other group members down. So I'm always trying to do anything I can to get the work done.

c) Organization
Satisfactory- My locker may not always be the cleanest, but I always try to get the time to organize it. Also my binder for math, science and humanities can sometimes be organized. When I go home, if I have any spare time after homework and everything, I try to organize my binder. Throw away any papers I don't need, make sure everything is in the right placed. So that's how I think I'm doing in my organization skills.

d) Effort
Satisfactory- Most of the time I'm always putting all my effort in to class work, homework, projects and tests.

Goal 1 – In grade 7, I plan to start spending more time on editing my work. Recently, I looked over my writing pieces in grade 6 and I have realized a lot of grammar and punctuation problems. I think I should really make sure I look back at all my work and make sure that everything makes sense and everything is where it’s supposed to be.

Goal 2 – In grade 7, I plan to talk less during class. I can really get my work done in class, but it only depends on what’s around me. I know that if I’m sitting with my friends, then I will get easily distracted. So next year I have to think about what might distract me from my work and make sure I try my best to avoid this.

6. Is there any more information about yourself that you would like the teachers to know?

No, there is no more information about myself. This blogpost explains everything about me.

7. What was your favorite activity lesson in Humanities this year? What did you enjoy about it?

My favourite part of humanities this year was learning about ancient Egypt. I think the activity about ancient Egypt that I enjoyed the most was the ancient Egyptian rap. I really enjoyed it because you had to be really creative and what I know about myself as a learner is that I like to do things more creatively. So this activity really matched my learning profile (profile L).

8. What activity do you wish we could have spent more time on?

I think we could have spent more time on the imaginative narrative. Well, I think we spent a lot of time on it, but I just wish we could do more! Like I said before, I’m a creative learner and the imaginative narrative is all about creating a creative story. So I really wish we could have done more of that because I really enjoyed it.

9. Finally, cast your minds back to the first few months of middle school (when you arrived in Grade 6 ) what "Words of Wisdom" or "Advice" could you pass on to the Class of 2018?

Three words: DON’T BE SCARED! During the first few months of 6th grade I was really scared! We were the youngest there. I didn’t know how to work my locker. I didn’t understand my schedule. I didn’t know where some classes were. I didn’t know how anything worked in middle school. I did know, though, that being scared wouldn’t get me anywhere. After a while, I got used to it! I enjoyed it! I wasn’t scared at all! It all seemed normal to me! So I think that one thing you shouldn’t do is Freak Out!
